He Brought Color To My World is a portrait of my son, Ramses Aion Justice. I named him after a king and the God of Time, represented in his majestic scale and the eternal representation of the galaxies. He is a Pisces, as represented in the two fish. I was inspired by a poem I wrote titled “Fish Tank” and the thought of dreaming big.
When he was three, he was taken from me by lies and deceit, and we were separated for a year. Through the court system, I was able to regain a place in his life, yet I am still on the outside of his world, while his mother whispers evil in his ear, alienating him from me and my wife. She is on the inside, looking pretty, but I had to place band aides over his ear to protect him from hearing what young ears should not endure. The marks on his right shoulder are symbolic of Ramses being a victim of domestic violence.
He Brought Color To My World sits over my work station and I am constantly inspired by Ramses’ presence in my world. I wanted to give him so much more than I have been capable of giving, and yet as the tale of the widow’s mite, I have given all I have.
As a father, my voice is calling out to my son in this painting, telling him, “Dream Big. Look up, and Dream big!”
